Chapter Seventeen

It was getting late, and Dennis wasn’t happy with the way things had been going in the Tumbleweed that night. The boys had been drinking heavily and were rowdier than usual. He could tell some of them were just plain looking for a fight. He’d managed to keep things under control so far, but it had been his experience when dealing with drunks that violence could break out at the drop of a hat.

Dennis had been hoping Jace and Grant would come by after the social. Their presence might have helped calm the place down a little, but the church event had ended some hours before and neither lawman had shown up. Resigned, he kept his hidden shotgun close at hand while he kept serving up drinks.

“You’re not smiling,” Lilly said as she came to stand at the bar with him.

“There ain’t a lot to smile about tonight,” he grumbled.

“You noticed that, too, did you?” She grimaced. It had already been a long night, and they still had a few hours to go before closing time.

“I keep expecting trouble,” Dennis answered, keeping his voice low.

“I hope you’re wrong.”

“So do I.” He turned away to wait on two of the men who’d come to the bar for refills.

At that moment the violence Dennis had been expecting broke out. Two men who’d been involved in a poker game at the back of the saloon charged to their feet. They knocked the table aside as they went at each other, fists flying.

“Get out of here, Lilly,” Dennis ordered, not wanting her to be in harm’s way if the fight escalated.

She wasted no time taking refuge in the kitchen.

Dennis was determined not to let the violence get out of control. He left the bar and went over to where the two men were battling it out. He was bigger and meaner than either one of the drunks, so he stalked right up to them and grabbed one by the back of his shirt just as he started to lunge at the other.

“Stan Collins! You know I don’t like fighting in my saloon!” he shouted as he dragged Stan to the swinging doors and tossed him bodily outside. That done, he turned back to the other drunk, Zeke Miller, who was coming after him in a rage. In one deft move, Dennis snared him, too, and gave him a hard shove out the doors.

Hank had sought out Walt after his run-in with Jace earlier that evening, and the two of them had stayed together ever since, making the rounds and keeping an eye on things. They understood that they had to get used to working together, so they concentrated on doing their jobs and tried to put their personal feelings aside. It wasn’t easy for either one of them, but they were both determined to prove to Jace and Grant that they were strong enough to do it.

They had just been coming up the street as they finished their last rounds for the night when they saw the two men being thrown out of the Tumbleweed.
